CBSE Class 10 Board Exam Preparation Plan (Month-wise)

Class 10 is the first board exam of your child's life, and for many families in India it feels like a very big deal. The good news: scoring well in the CBSE Class 10 board exam is not about studying 12 hours a day. It is about a clear plan, the right books, regular revision and lots of practice.

This guide gives students and parents a simple, month-by-month CBSE Class 10 board exam preparation plan, subject-wise tips, common mistakes to avoid, and how live online tuition can help you stay on track.

First, know your exam

Before making a plan, spend 30 minutes understanding what you are preparing for:

  • Syllabus: download the latest Class 10 syllabus from the official CBSE academic website (cbseacademic.nic.in). Some chapters get added or removed over the years, so don't depend on old lists.
  • Sample papers and marking scheme: CBSE releases official sample question papers with marking schemes. These show the latest question pattern, types of questions and how marks are given.
  • Date sheet: CBSE board exams usually start around February. Always check the official date sheet on cbse.gov.in instead of WhatsApp forwards.
  • Internal assessment: school-based marks (practicals, projects, periodic tests) also count, so take them seriously.

Month-by-month CBSE Class 10 preparation plan

Here is a practical plan you can start today. Adjust it as per your school's pre-board dates.

November: Finish the syllabus

  • Complete any chapters your school has not finished yet. Don't wait for the teacher if your school is behind.
  • Read every NCERT chapter line by line, especially Science and Social Science. Most questions come directly from NCERT.
  • Make short notes for each chapter: formulas, definitions, diagrams, dates and keywords on 1 to 2 pages.

December: First full revision + chapter tests

  • Revise one chapter of each subject daily using your short notes.
  • After each chapter, solve NCERT exercises and in-text questions without looking at answers.
  • Mark weak chapters in red. These need extra time in January.

January: Sample papers and pre-boards

  • Solve at least one full sample paper every 2 to 3 days in exam conditions: 3 hours, no phone, timer on.
  • Check your answers using the official CBSE marking scheme. Learn where marks are lost: missing steps, units, diagrams or keywords.
  • Treat pre-boards like the real exam. Your mistakes here are free lessons.

February onward: Smart final revision

  • Only revise from your own short notes and the mistakes you made in sample papers.
  • Don't start new reference books now. Stick to NCERT and what you have already practised.
  • Sleep 7 to 8 hours. A fresh mind writes better answers than a tired one.

Subject-wise tips for Class 10 boards

Maths

  • Solve every NCERT exercise and example. Do the tough ones twice.
  • Keep a formula sheet and revise it daily for 10 minutes.
  • Show every step. CBSE gives step marks, so a correct method still earns marks even if the final answer is wrong.

Science

  • Divide your time across Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Many students ignore one part and lose easy marks.
  • Practise diagrams (human eye, heart, electric circuits, ray diagrams) with neat labels.
  • Write chemical equations again and again until they are balanced and correct without help.

Social Science

  • Make timelines for History, and flowcharts for Political Science and Economics.
  • Practise map work every week. Map questions are among the easiest marks in the paper.
  • Write answers in points with keywords, not long paragraphs.

English and Hindi

  • Practise writing tasks (letters, articles, analytical paragraphs) in the exact format given in the sample paper.
  • Read every lesson and poem from the textbook and know the theme and character details.
  • Watch your grammar, spelling and handwriting. Neat presentation helps.

A simple daily timetable for Class 10 students

On school days, try this routine after school:

  • 1 hour: the toughest subject of the day (usually Maths or Science)
  • 1 hour: a second subject (Social Science or a language)
  • 45 minutes: revision of what was taught in school or in tuition that day
  • 30 minutes: practice questions or a short chapter test

Take a 10-minute break between sessions. Keep the phone in another room while studying. On holidays, add a full sample paper in the morning.

Common mistakes that cost marks

  • Skipping NCERT and running after too many guide books.
  • Only reading, never writing. Board exams test how well you write answers in time.
  • Leaving revision for the last week.
  • Not attempting all questions. Even a partly correct answer can get marks.
  • Studying late at night and sleeping too little before the exam.
  • Keeping doubts inside. One unclear concept can affect many questions.

How parents can help

Parents don't need to teach every subject. What helps most is a calm home, a fixed study time, healthy food and good sleep. Check the weekly plan with your child, celebrate small progress, and avoid comparing them with other children. If your child is stuck on doubts again and again, getting a good teacher's support early is better than waiting for pre-board results.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start preparing for the CBSE Class 10 board exam?

The best time is now. If your child starts serious, planned study 4 to 5 months before the exam, there is enough time to finish the syllabus, revise twice and practise sample papers without panic.

How many hours should a Class 10 student study daily?

Most students do well with 3 to 4 focused hours on school days and 5 to 6 hours on holidays, with short breaks. Regular daily study matters more than very long hours on one day.
