Every week we get the same question from students and their parents: "How do I get an AI job in India as a fresher?" Artificial intelligence is now used in banking, healthcare, e-commerce, IT services and even government projects, so the interest is real. But most freshers don't know where to start, what to learn first, or what companies actually check in interviews.
This guide gives you a simple, step-by-step roadmap: which AI jobs are open to freshers, the skills you need, the projects that impress recruiters, and how to prepare for interviews. Read it fully before you spend money on any course.
What kind of AI jobs can freshers get?
"AI job" is a big word. As a fresher you will usually start in one of these entry-level roles and grow from there:
- Junior Data Analyst: cleans data, makes reports and dashboards (Excel, SQL, Power BI, Python). A very common first step into AI.
- Python Developer (AI/ML team): writes code, scripts and APIs that use AI models.
- Machine Learning / AI Trainee or Intern: helps build, test and improve ML models under a senior engineer.
- Generative AI / Prompt and Chatbot roles: builds chatbots and tools on top of large language models (LLMs).
- AI Cloud Support roles: works with AI services on cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure.
Senior titles like Data Scientist or AI Engineer usually come after you have some project or work experience. So don't wait for a "perfect" title. Get in, learn on the job and move up.
Step 1: Build strong basics (months 1 to 2)
Most freshers fail AI interviews not because AI is hard, but because their basics are weak. Focus on:
- Python: variables, loops, functions, lists, dictionaries, file handling and simple object-oriented programming.
- Maths for AI: school-level statistics (mean, median, probability), basic linear algebra (vectors, matrices) and graphs. You don't need to be a maths topper.
- SQL and Excel: almost every data and AI job uses data from databases and spreadsheets.
Practise a little every day. One hour of coding daily is better than seven hours on Sunday.
Step 2: Learn data handling and machine learning (months 2 to 4)
- Use NumPy and pandas to load, clean and analyse data.
- Make charts with Matplotlib or build dashboards in Power BI.
- Learn core machine learning with scikit-learn: regression, classification, clustering, train/test split and model accuracy.
- Understand the full flow: problem, data, model, evaluation and result. Interviewers love to ask you to explain this flow.
Step 3: Move to deep learning and generative AI (months 4 to 6)
Once ML basics are clear, learn the tools behind today's AI boom:
- Neural networks with PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Computer vision (image classification) and natural language processing (text classification, sentiment)
- How LLMs work at a high level, prompt engineering, and building a simple chatbot using an LLM API
- Basics of deploying a model, for example as a small web app or on a cloud platform
Step 4: Build 3 to 4 projects you can explain
For freshers, projects are your experience. Pick problems that feel real, such as:
- A sales or student-marks dashboard with insights
- A house price or crop yield prediction model
- A customer review sentiment analyser (Hindi or English)
- A FAQ chatbot for a college, shop or coaching centre using an LLM
Put your code and a short write-up for each project online, and add them to your resume. In interviews, be ready to explain why you chose the data, what went wrong and how you fixed it. That story matters more than the accuracy number.
Step 5: Add a certification
A recognised certification shows recruiters that an external exam has checked your basics. Beginners often start with a fundamentals exam such as Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900) and later move to role-based certifications. Microsoft regularly updates and retires exams, so always confirm the current status on Microsoft Learn before you book. See our AI-900 training and the full list on the offers page.
Step 6: Prepare your resume and interviews
- Keep the resume to 1 page: skills, projects (with links), certifications and education.
- Revise common questions: difference between AI, ML and deep learning; overfitting; precision vs recall; how a decision tree works; what an LLM is.
- Practise Python and SQL coding questions every day for the last few weeks.
- Do mock interviews. Speaking your answers out loud builds confidence quickly.
- Apply widely: company career pages, job portals, LinkedIn and campus drives. Don't stop after a few rejections; every interview teaches you something.
Common mistakes freshers make
- Watching endless videos without writing code.
- Jumping to generative AI without learning Python and data basics.
- Copying projects from the internet that they can't explain.
- Collecting many certificates but building no projects.
- Learning alone with no one to clear doubts or review their work.

Frequently asked questions
Can a fresher get an AI job in India without experience?
Yes, many companies hire freshers for entry-level roles such as junior data analyst, AI/ML trainee, Python developer or AI support roles. What they want to see is solid basics in Python, data and machine learning, plus 2 to 4 projects you can explain clearly in the interview.
Do I need a B.Tech or computer science degree for an AI job?
A computer science or engineering degree helps, but it is not the only path. BCA, B.Sc, B.Com and other graduates also move into data and AI roles by learning Python, SQL, statistics and machine learning step by step and building a project portfolio.
How long does it take to become job-ready in AI?
It depends on your starting point and how many hours you study. With regular daily practice, many beginners take around 6 months to a year to build strong basics and a few good projects. Our career plans run from 6 months to 1.5 years for this reason.
Which programming language should I learn first for AI?
Start with Python. It is the most widely used language for data science, machine learning and generative AI, and most AI libraries such as NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch and TensorFlow are built for it.
Are certifications useful for AI jobs?
Certifications help you show recruiters that your basics are checked by an external exam, especially as a fresher. They work best together with real projects. Many beginners start with a fundamentals exam such as Microsoft AI-900; always check the exam's current status on Microsoft Learn before you book it.
