Best Microsoft Certifications for Freshers in India

For freshers in India, a Microsoft certification is one of the clearest ways to show employers that you have learned a specific, in-demand skill. But Microsoft offers dozens of exams, and choosing the wrong one can waste months. This guide explains which certifications make sense as a starting point, what each one proves, and how to move from a beginner exam to a job-ready one.

How Microsoft certifications are organised

Microsoft groups its certifications into levels:

  • Fundamentals: entry-level exams with no prerequisites. They prove you understand the concepts and do not expire.
  • Associate: role-based exams that test practical skills for a specific job such as administrator, developer or data analyst. They are valid for 12 months and can be renewed free online.
  • Expert and Specialty: advanced exams usually taken after some work experience.

As a fresher, start with one Fundamentals exam in the area you want to work in, then aim for one Associate exam. Employers hiring freshers mainly look for evidence that you can do the job, so the Associate level and hands-on projects matter most.

1. AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals

Best for: anyone new to cloud computing, including non-IT graduates.

AZ-900 covers cloud concepts, core Azure services, pricing, security and governance. It is the most common first step into Microsoft cloud and gives you the vocabulary used in almost every cloud job interview. It is not a job qualification by itself, but it makes the Associate exams easier.

Next step: AZ-104 Azure Administrator for infrastructure and support roles, or AZ-204 Azure Developer if you code.

2. AI-900: Azure AI Fundamentals

Best for: students curious about AI, machine learning and generative AI.

AI-900 introduces machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI workloads on Azure. It needs no coding background, which makes it a good way to test your interest in AI before investing in deeper study.

Next step: AI-102 Azure AI Engineer if you want to build AI solutions, or DP-100 Azure Data Scientist for machine learning.

3. DP-900: Azure Data Fundamentals

Best for: freshers aiming at data analyst, BI or data engineering roles.

DP-900 covers relational and non-relational data, data analytics concepts and the Azure data services that support them. If you enjoy SQL, Excel or reporting, this is the natural foundation.

4. PL-900: Power Platform Fundamentals

Best for: commerce, management and business graduates who want a tech-enabled role.

PL-900 introduces Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI and the wider Power Platform, which let organisations build apps and automate work with little code. It leads into functional consultant and app maker roles.

5. PL-300: Power BI Data Analyst (first Associate exam)

Best for: freshers who want a data analyst job.

PL-300 is often the most practical first Associate certification for freshers because Power BI is widely used and the skills are easy to demonstrate in a portfolio. The exam tests preparing, modelling, visualising and analysing data and managing Power BI, and expects you to be comfortable with Power Query and DAX.

Tips for freshers preparing for Microsoft exams

  1. Use the free official material first. Microsoft Learn learning paths, practice assessments and the exam sandbox are free.
  2. Get hands-on. Associate exams include practical scenarios. Build small projects, such as a Power BI dashboard on public data or a simple Azure web app, and put them on GitHub or LinkedIn.
  3. Check the study guide. Each exam has an official study guide listing the skills measured. Revise against it, not against random question lists.
  4. Plan the cost. Fundamentals and Associate exams have different fees in India, and Microsoft's student discount is not offered in India. See our Microsoft certification exam fees in India (2026) guide.
  5. Do not stop at Fundamentals. Fundamentals show interest; an Associate certification plus projects shows ability.

Other certifications to consider later

AZ-104 Azure Administrator is the standard Associate exam for cloud support and infrastructure roles. It is demanding for a fresher, so most people take it after AZ-900 and several weeks of hands-on practice in the Azure portal. Course: AZ-104 Azure Administrator course.

DP-600 Fabric Analytics Engineer is a strong second data certification once you are comfortable with Power BI and SQL. Read our PL-300 vs DP-600 comparison to decide when to take it. Course: DP-600 Microsoft Fabric course.

Build a portfolio alongside your certification

Recruiters screening freshers see many CVs with the same certification. What makes you stand out is proof that you have used the skill. Some practical ideas:

  • Data analyst path: publish two or three Power BI reports built on public datasets (for example Indian government open data) and write a short explanation of the business questions each report answers.
  • Cloud path: deploy a simple website or API on Azure, document the architecture with a diagram, and note how you controlled cost.
  • AI path: build a small app that uses an Azure AI service, such as document summarisation or image tagging, and share the code on GitHub.

Add the certification badge from your Microsoft Learn profile to LinkedIn, and link to your projects from your CV. In interviews, be ready to explain what you built, what went wrong and how you fixed it.

How long does it take?

It depends on your background and daily study time. As a rough guide, a Fundamentals exam takes a few weeks of regular study, while an Associate exam usually needs one to three months including hands-on practice. Plan a realistic schedule and book the exam only when your practice assessment scores are consistently comfortable.
