PL-300 vs DP-600: Which Should You Take?

PL-300 and DP-600 are two of the most popular Microsoft data certifications, and both involve Power BI. That overlap causes confusion: which one should you take, and in what order? This guide compares the two exams using Microsoft's official descriptions so you can decide based on the job you want.

What PL-300 is about

PL-300 is for people who turn data into insights for the business. Microsoft describes the role as delivering actionable insights through easy-to-understand visualisations and enabling others to do self-service analytics. In practice that means connecting to data, cleaning it with Power Query, building a data model, writing DAX measures, designing reports and dashboards, and managing workspaces, sharing and security in the Power BI service.

The work is centred on Power BI itself. You do not need to build data pipelines or warehouses for this exam.

What DP-600 is about

DP-600 is for people who design and build analytics solutions on Microsoft Fabric. Microsoft describes the candidate as having expertise in designing, creating and managing analytical assets such as semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses. You work with architects, analysts, engineers and administrators, and you are expected to query and analyse data with SQL, KQL and DAX.

DP-600 goes deeper into the platform behind the report: preparing and enriching data in Fabric, securing and maintaining analytics assets, and implementing enterprise-scale semantic models. Power BI is part of it, but so are lakehouses, warehouses and data preparation in Fabric.

The key differences

1. Scope

PL-300 focuses on the Power BI report and model. DP-600 covers the end-to-end analytics solution in Fabric, from prepared data in a lakehouse or warehouse to the semantic model that reports use.

2. Technical depth

PL-300 requires Power Query and DAX. DP-600 adds SQL and KQL, and expects you to understand data storage and preparation inside Fabric. If you have never written SQL, DP-600 will feel harder.

3. Target role

PL-300 maps to data analyst and Power BI developer roles. DP-600 maps to analytics engineer roles that sit between data engineering and BI, especially in organisations adopting Microsoft Fabric.

4. Cost

Both are Associate-level exams, so they are in the same fee band. See our Microsoft certification exam fees in India (2026) guide for details.

Which should you take first?

  • Take PL-300 first if you are a fresher, a business or commerce graduate, or an Excel user moving into analytics. It builds the Power BI modelling and DAX skills that DP-600 also relies on.
  • Take DP-600 first if you already work with Power BI and SQL, or your company is moving to Microsoft Fabric and you are expected to build lakehouses, warehouses and shared semantic models.
  • Take both if you want to grow from data analyst to analytics engineer. A common path is DP-900 (optional), then PL-300, then DP-600.

How to prepare

  1. Download the official study guide for your exam from Microsoft Learn and use the "skills measured" list as your checklist.
  2. Take the free official practice assessment early to find your weak areas.
  3. Practise hands-on. For PL-300, build reports from real datasets in Power BI Desktop. For DP-600, use a Fabric trial to create a lakehouse, load data, build a semantic model and query it with SQL.
  4. Try the exam sandbox so the interface is familiar on exam day.

Who each exam is not for

PL-300 may not be the best fit if your job is mostly building data pipelines, managing data platforms or writing Spark code. In that case the report-focused content of PL-300 will feel too narrow, and a Fabric or data engineering certification is more relevant.

DP-600 may not be the best fit if you are completely new to data. Without a basic understanding of data modelling, SQL and Power BI, the exam's enterprise-scale scenarios are hard to follow. Build those foundations first.

A sample learning roadmap

  1. Foundations (optional): data concepts, SQL basics and Excel. DP-900 is a structured way to cover them.
  2. Power BI skills: Power Query transformations, star-schema modelling, DAX measures, report design and the Power BI service. Validate with PL-300.
  3. Fabric skills: workspaces, lakehouses and warehouses, loading and transforming data, Direct Lake and shared semantic models, plus SQL and KQL querying. Validate with DP-600.
  4. Portfolio: one end-to-end project that starts with raw data in a Fabric lakehouse and ends in a published Power BI report is strong evidence for both roles.

Career impact in India

Many Indian companies, IT services firms and global capability centres use Power BI for reporting, so PL-300 skills are widely applicable. Microsoft Fabric is newer, and DP-600 skills are most valuable in organisations that are adopting Fabric or modernising their analytics platform on Microsoft. Before you choose, look at job listings in the city or sector you are targeting and note which skills they ask for.

Frequently asked questions

Is DP-600 harder than PL-300?

For most people, yes, because it covers more of the platform and adds SQL and KQL alongside DAX.

Do I need PL-300 before DP-600?

No. Microsoft does not require it, but PL-300 skills such as data modelling and DAX are very useful for DP-600.

Which is better for a fresher?

PL-300 is usually the more accessible first step. See our guide to the best Microsoft certifications for freshers in India.
