If you are planning a Microsoft certification in 2026, the first practical question is usually the cost: how much does the exam itself cost in India, and what else should you budget for? This guide explains how Microsoft prices its exams, approximate fee levels for India as reported by third-party sources, and the legitimate ways to reduce what you pay.
How Microsoft prices certification exams
Microsoft does not publish one global price. Every official certification page on Microsoft Learn states that the price is based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored, and the final amount is shown when you schedule the exam with Pearson VUE. You can confirm this on any official page, for example the PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst certification page or the DP-600 Fabric Analytics Engineer certification page.
Prices follow the exam level rather than the individual exam. In the United States the standard fees are USD 99 for Fundamentals exams and USD 165 for Associate, Expert and Specialty exams. Other countries have their own local price list.
Microsoft exam fees in India (2026)
Microsoft does not publish a fixed INR price list. The figures below are approximate amounts reported by third-party sources for candidates testing in India; they are not official Microsoft prices. Microsoft shows the exact INR price at Pearson VUE checkout (see Microsoft's exam pricing page).
| Exam level | Examples | Approx. fee in India (third-party reported) | US price (reference) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fundamentals | AZ-900, AI-900, DP-900, PL-900 | ₹3,696 | USD 99 |
| Associate | AZ-104, AZ-204, PL-300, DP-600, AI-102 | ₹4,800 | USD 165 |
| Expert | AZ-305 | ₹4,800 | USD 165 |
| Specialty | AZ-140, AZ-220, DP-420 | ₹4,800 | USD 165 |
Important: taxes and exchange rates can change, and Microsoft can revise prices. Microsoft shows the exact INR price at Pearson VUE checkout after you select India as your country (see Microsoft's exam pricing page). Treat the approximate figures above as a planning guide, not a quote.
What the exam fee covers (and what it does not)
The fee covers one attempt at one exam, either at a Pearson VUE test centre or as an online proctored exam from home. It does not include:
- Retakes. If you fail, you can retake the exam 24 hours after your first attempt, but each retake is charged again. Waiting periods for later retakes are longer; see Microsoft's exam retake policy.
- Training. Instructor-led courses, labs and mock tests are optional and priced separately by training providers.
- Cloud usage. If you practise on a paid Azure subscription, those costs are separate. Free trial and student credits can cover most practice.
Renewal is free
Role-based (Associate and Expert) and Specialty certifications are valid for 12 months. You renew them at no cost by passing a free online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn before the expiry date, so you do not pay the exam fee again each year. Fundamentals certifications do not expire.
Ways to reduce the cost legitimately
1. Microsoft Virtual Training Days
Microsoft regularly runs free Virtual Training Days for selected Fundamentals topics. Attendees of eligible events have often received an exam discount or a voucher. Check the current offer terms on the Microsoft Events site before you register, as offers vary.
2. Student discounts (not available in India)
Microsoft offers academic pricing in most countries, but its official student discounts page states that this is available except in India and China. Indian students should look at Virtual Training Days, employer sponsorship or college partnership programmes instead.
3. Exam Replay
Microsoft periodically offers Exam Replay, a bundle that includes a retake at a reduced combined price. If you are nervous about a first attempt, check whether it is currently available for your exam.
4. Free preparation material
Every learning path on Microsoft Learn, the official practice assessments and the exam sandbox are free. Use the free practice assessment to check your readiness before you pay for the exam, which reduces the chance of paying for a retake.
A sample budget for your first certification
For a fresher starting with a Fundamentals exam such as AZ-900, the minimum spend is the exam fee itself, because the official study material is free. If you choose structured training, add the course fee. For an Associate exam such as PL-300 or AZ-104, budget for the higher exam fee and, ideally, some hands-on practice time, because these exams test practical skills.
Which exam should you start with?
- New to cloud: AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals course
- Interested in AI: AI-900 Azure AI Fundamentals course
- Interested in data: DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals course
- Want a data analyst job: PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst course
- Working with Microsoft Fabric: DP-600 Microsoft Fabric course
- Want to administer Azure: AZ-104 Azure Administrator course

How to register for a Microsoft exam from India: step by step
- Create or sign in to your Microsoft Learn profile with a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft recommends a personal account, because exam records linked to a work or school account can be lost if you leave that organisation.
- Open the official certification page for your exam on Microsoft Learn and choose "Schedule exam".
- Complete your certification profile. Your name must match the government ID you will show on exam day.
- Choose delivery: a Pearson VUE test centre near you, or an online proctored exam from home. For online exams, run the system test on the computer you will use, in the room you will use.
- Select India as your country, pick a date and time, and review the price shown at checkout before paying.
- Apply any voucher or discount code at checkout if you have one.
Online exam or test centre?
Online proctored exams save travel time and are convenient if you live far from a test centre, but they have strict rules: a quiet private room, a clear desk, a working webcam and a stable internet connection. A test centre removes the risk of a home internet failure and provides the equipment. If your connection at home is unreliable, a test centre is usually the safer choice.
Common mistakes that cost money
- Booking before you are ready. Use the free practice assessment first. A failed attempt means paying the full fee again.
- Name mismatches. If the name on your profile does not match your ID, you may be turned away and lose the fee.
- Missing renewal. If an Associate certification expires because you missed the free renewal window, you may need to pass the paid exam again.
- Late rescheduling. Pearson VUE sets deadlines for free rescheduling or cancellation. Check the policy in your confirmation email.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay the Microsoft exam fee in rupees?
When you schedule from India through Pearson VUE, the local price is shown at checkout. Check the currency and payment options displayed on that screen.

Microsoft's pricing is based on the exam and country, not on the delivery method. Confirm the amount at checkout for your chosen option.
Do I have to pay to renew?
No. Renewal for role-based and Specialty certifications is a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
